Microsoft Earns Forgiveness With Windows 10

Microsoft on Tuesday pulled back the veil on the successor to Windows 8, and instead of debuting an expected Windows 9 version of its personal computer OS, the company introduced the world to Windows 10. A technical preview was made available on Wednesday. Microsoft also kicked off its largest-ever open collaborative development effort with the new Windows Insider Program, which is meant to help provide feedback to the company. Program participants will receive the technical preview of Windows 10, as well as the latest builds through the final development cycle. "Windows 10 carries Windows forward into a new way of doing things," Microsoft said in a statement provided to TechNewsWorld by spokesperson Eri Mizobe. "It is not an incremental change, but a new Windows that will empower the next billion users." Back to the Start Windows 10 is a combination of the best elements of the popular Windows 7 OS, along with some of the touchscreen-friendly features and f...

10 Things You Didn't Know Your Android Phone Could Do

1. Send Your Ex Straight to Voicemail We've all got a few people we'd rather not talk to. Rather than manually screening every call, set up your phone to do the dirty work for you. Load up the culprit's contact card, select Edit, and then scroll down to Additional Info. Select "Send straight to voicemail" from the list to have every subsequent call from that person bypass your ringer entirely.  2. Screen Calls More Politely Okay, you're not always sending people to voicemail because you can't stand them. Sometimes you're in a meeting and can't talk. Android has a way to silence a call without giving your friend the cold shoulder; you can send a custom text message to let him know you'll call back later. To create your own note, go to Phone Settings, and then Quick Responses. Next time you need to silence a call, swipe up to send your canned response.  3. Map it Out Just because you're traveling somewhere without cell service doesn...

The future of artificial intelligence: Will computers take your job?

The field of artificial intelligence may not be able to create a robotic vacuum cleaner that never knocks over a vase, at least not within a couple of years, but intelligent machines will increasingly replace knowledge workers in the near future, a group of AI experts predicted. An AI machine that can learn the same way humans do, and has the equivalent processing power of a human brain, is still a few years off, the experts said. But AI programs that can reliably assist with medical diagnosis and offer sound investing advice are on the near horizon, said Andrew McAfee, co-founder of the Initiative on the Digital Economy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For decades, Luddites have mistakenly predicted that automation will create large unemployment problems, but those predictions may finally come true as AI matures in the next few years, McAfee said Monday during a discussion on the future of AI at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C. Innovative...

5 Scientifically Proven Reasons It's Better To Be Single

Crying into a pint of ice cream alone on Valentine's Day? Talking through your problems with your cat? Taking your mom to your office holiday party? Hardly. These are absurd stereotypes of singledom — not the reality. "[Does] getting married result in lasting improvements to mental health, physical health, or any of the other supposed goodies?" asks Bella DePaulo, a psychologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the author of Singled Out. "The answer ... is no." Marriage and partnership have their perks, but scientists have shown again and again that being single has a long list of benefits. Here are five big ones: 1.
