How to boost IT efficiency by 75% and create time for innovation

Ever have one of those days where you feel like you’re just running to stand still, like you’re on a treadmill cranked too high and can’t be shut off? Too often this is what working in IT is like now!

Big data. Mobile. Cloud. These intense forces are reshaping IT environments. The result? More systems and applications to manage than ever.

According to IDC research, the average number of Virtual Machines per physical server is predicted to double between 2008 and 2016. The percentage of data center IT operations costs spent on staff is up 40% in the last 5 years. On average, a substantial majority of IT budgets gets eaten up by maintenance — in other words, running to stand still.

Efficiency, efficiency, efficiency
The problem, of course, is that if you’re working hard to just stand still, you’ll eventually fall behind. IT organizations have become very focused on Improving IT staff productivity and operational efficiency, as well as implementing common tools, services, processes across cloud and non-cloud environments.

A growing number of forward-thinking IT organizations are aggressively investing in automation and orchestration solutions. They recognize that expanding automation and orchestration initiatives is a key stepping stone to achieving many other priorities, like accelerating cloud initiatives.

By orchestrating IT processes — coordinating automated tasks and activities across teams, tools, and environments — organizations reduce errors and improve consistency and reliability. They can also enable their team to deploy new infrastructure faster while responding more quickly to issues. A majority of IT organizations have reduced task and process execution time by 50% or more, and many achieve greater than 75% efficiency gains.

These are clearly valuable benefits in their own right for the time and money saved. But automation and orchestration offers an even greater strategic advantage: it relieves staff from executing time-consuming manual tasks and instead lets them focus on other, more innovative initiatives.

Managing IT with less hands-on, manual intervention across the organization helps break the tread mill run!

Can Nightmares Cause Death? Spirit Possession? Mental Illness?

A lot of the research on nightmares suggests these events test the strength of one’s mind. If the mind is not strong, nightmares can take hold with greater force and the torment can extend beyond one’s dreams. Dr. Patrick McNamara of the Boston University School of Medicine looks at nightmares in a modern clinical context that also takes into account the history of dream phenomena in many cultures. He connects nightmares with a world of malevolent spirits. Spirit Possession Some people who experience frequent nightmares, both today and throughout history, also show signs in waking life of mental illness and even what may be seen as spirit possession. Dr. McNamara seems unabashed in speaking about spirit possession. “Nightmares very often involve supernatural characters that attack or target the dreamer in some way. I mean monsters, creatures, demons, spirits, unusual animals, and the like,” Dr. McNamara said in an interview with Boston University’s alumni publicat...

How to discover space hogs on your hard drive

If you have a hard drive that is quickly approaching capacity, sorting through the files and folders for the ones taking up the most space can be a really time-consuming process. There’s an easier way to do it—it’s the subject of our latest Tech Tip. For help identifying space hogs, let’s turn to TreeSize Free, which is available for Windows 8, as well as Windows 7, Vista, and XP. Launch the program, go to scan, and select the drive you want to take a look at. The application shows you, in gigabytes, megabytes, and kilobytes, how big each folder is, ranked from most to least. One of the nice things you can do with TreeSize Free is drill down into subfolders to see what sort of space is being taken up. If I want to right click on a folder and see what the files are like or delete them, I can go ahead and do that. Note that TreeSize Free does not dynamically update, so after you delete the data you’ll have to run the scan again to get an accurate count of file...

How to lose weight

More than one-third of adults in the United States are obese. In fact, the furor over obesity, which some have termed an “epidemic,” has reached such proportions that one big-city mayor has gone about banning large-sized, sugary soft drinks and the First Lady has been on a crusade to control the dietary offerings in public schools. Even many adults who do not fit the clinic definition of obese are still overweight, and a large percentage are looking for the best ways to lose weight. Shedding pounds largely comes down to the two-pronged factors of diet and exercise. Not modifying the first one enough, and not getting enough of the second one, ends up giving the individual a recipe for being overweight.  Conditions related to obesity include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Counseling someone to eat less and exercise more might be the simplest advice possible, but it’s also, partiall...
